I can’t think of anything better that boosts self-esteem than living a healthy/healthier lifestyle. I know that EVERYTHING is always easier said than done and actions always speak louder than words, believe me, I’ve been there and done that. The thought of eliminating bad habits almost seems uncontrollable and pretty overwhelming at times but it comes down to lack of motivation and procrastination. I haven’t always lived the healthy lifestyle that I do now, but it has changed my life and my perspective on it.
I have to point out that that as much as I love eating clean and doing all that good stuff I love to cheat once in a while…I mean with food. Pizza, burgers, fries…you name it, and that’s completely ok. I’m human, not a robot! But I always compensate for that by putting the extra effort in my next workout. It’s really all about balance. I workout 4-5 times a week (usually Monday – Friday), and eat as clean and balanced as I can. I’ll get into more detail in another post about what I eat, my workouts and how I stay motivated to live a healthy lifestyle. For now, I’ll leave you with some tips that I began to implement into my life when I decided to make that lifestyle change.
DRINK MORE WATER.
I know how many times you’ve heard this. I know how boring it sounds, but trust me when I tell you the difference drinking more water can make. Because I sweat a lot when I work out I aim to drink a gallon of water daily. (The amount of water you should drink depends on your size and how active you are.) Glowing skin, weight loss, increased energy…the list goes on.
Eating clean just simply means incorporating whole and organic foods into your diet, avoiding and/or limiting refined sugars and processed foods, eating more fruits & vegetables and whole grains. It’s really that simple. Make substitutions. I avoid eating white rice, bread or anything bleached to that extent. I’ve simply swapped it out with brown rice, brown bread, whole grain pasta. Easy! One rule I follow when eating meals (specifically dinner) is that I make sure 1/2 of my plate is vegetables, 1/4 is protein, and 1/4 is carbs. It’s true what they say…abs are made in the kitchen.
SWEAT IT OUT.
Nothing makes me feel more pumped and exhilarated than working out. Cardio and strength training are my favorite types of workouts, but I also really love flexibility exercises like pilates and yoga. The key is to do exercises you actually enjoy. Working out shouldn’t be grueling, rather it should be enjoyable and challenging. Unless I’m working out with a friend, I always listen to music when I workout, it’s a sure way to motivate me more and keeps me going. One more thing I want to share about working out is that I love to wear cute gym clothes while doing it. It seems pretty trivial, but it works. (At least for me)
We all require a recommended 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and it’s extremely important that we get that. Being in college, occasionally I have to sacrifice sleep to study for an important test, but I try my hardest to organize myself and get things done on time so that I get enough sleep. Typically I love to wake up between 7-8AM and get a lot done.
IMAGINE YOUR IDEAL SELF.
Initially, when I started this whole healthy lifestyle journey, I envisioned exactly my ideal self. How I wanted to feel and what I wanted to look like. I kept an inspiration board (still do) of pictures of my ideal body and state of mind and this kept me dedicated.
I hope this helped anyone out there. Have a great day!
